Contend for the faith

.
“Contending for the faith” in the above scriptures includes challenging what is being taught and practiced in churches or Christian ministries and probably less about what is going on in the unbelieving world.

There is usually opposition within churches or from Christian ministries when wrong (unbiblical) teachings or practices are challenged (challenged by whoever).

Now that the canon of scripture (completed Bible) is closed at Revelation 22:21 (occurred about 2000 years ago) then the Bible is the authority of Christianity and all church leaders are subservient to its teachings – even the Roman Catholic pope is.
Anyone can challenge the teachings and practices of a church or Christian ministry leader/teacher, if those teachings and practices conflict with Bible counsel.
Even an unbeliever could challenge a Christian leader/teacher by pointing out the Bible passages they are contradicting.

Challenging fraud (anything that contradicts appropriately interpreted Bible counsel) is a consequence of loving the truth.

You cannot get to heaven unless you love the truth, or put another way, you will go to hell for loving and practicing falsehood:

Rev 22:15 Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

Even being “lukewarm” (compromising truth) leads to disqualification by God:

Rev 3:15-16 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

If you are not challenging fraud where you encounter it (even within yourself!) then you are not a lover of the truth, and will be rejected by God, maybe even handed over to a strong delusion:

2 Thes 2:10-11 They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie

If you do not love the truth sufficiently to challenge fraud then you could also be a coward, which the Bible also warns leads to disqualification:

Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

When people challenge church or Christian ministry leaders/teachers they are often resisted with improper devices such as “don’t be contentious”, “don’t challenge God’s anointed”, “whose covering are you under”, “which church leader are you submitting to”, “you have unresolved hurts”.
Assertions like that show they are placing Christian leaders/teachers above the authority of scripture.
See the following list (pdf file) of improper devices used to try and block people who contend for the faith:
