Using the phrase “I AM”

Using the phrase “I AM” as spiritual identity for the idolatry of “self”.

The phrase “I AM” is a regular feature in New Age and occult in its association with “personal divinity”, eg. see this New Age explanation: http://www.thechristmind.org/

In the Bible “I AM” is given as one of the names for the God of Genesis 1:1

Exodus 3:13-14 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'”

Jesus Christ associated this name to himself on the question of his divinity, this was recognised by the church leaders and they condemned him for blasphemy because of it:

John 8:51-59 I tell you the truth, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death.”
At this the Jews exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that if anyone keeps your word, he will never taste death. Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?”
Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.”
“You are not yet fifty years old,” the Jews said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!”
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.

Mark 14:61-64 Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?”
They all condemned him as worthy of death.

Jesus Christ asserted his divinity with exclusive claims:

I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me.” John 14:6

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

“The god of this age”, Satan (2 Cor 4:3-4) is inciting people to use the name “I AM” for themselves in describing their spiritual identity and this is happening in Christian churches and ministries.

Consider this scripture warning from Jesus Christ about this:

Matthew 24:5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

The new age / occult follows a concept of a universal Christ in all religions and Christians are being encouraged to “be a Jesus” to their neighbour and to develop “the Jesus in you”.

Christians are witnesses or ambassadors of Jesus Christ (2 Cor 5:20), but none of them are “a Jesus”. That is blasphemy and matches the warning “many will come in my name”.

Exodus 20:7 “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

The New Age / occult false Christ is the collective consciousness of all people who believe in their personal divinity, and therefore they describe themselves “I am the Christ”.

This is the fulfilment of Jesus’ warning “For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many”.

Matthew 24:24 …false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive……

An example of false christ deception being introduced into churches is the following “Christian” music ministry group promoting an album “I AM FUTURE”

RPM is now I AM FUTURE
I am future is the soundtrack to the Rocknations movement and is about liberating and strengthening young people to grab hold of who they are in God and bring change in this generation. We want to see young people, stand up and say I am hope, I am love, I am justice, I am future.

Go to http://www.alm.org.uk/worship/ …..watch the embedded video on that page. It mentions “young people living for something bigger than themselves” and then associates that “something” as “your dream”, “your greatness” “your amazing exploits”.

This is seduction for a false gospel that goes with a false Christ.

Gal 1:7 Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.

The teachings from RPM above encourage people to look within themselves: “I am hope, I am love, I am justice, I am future”.

This goes completely in the opposite direction of the true Christian gospel which points to Jesus Christ who was crucified on the cross and physically rose again as the hope, the love, the justice, the future.

Psalm 115:1 Not to us, O LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.

The RPM group (above) have preached a message that reverses this counsel to go in the direction of:
“I AM, I AM, I AM christ, my name is the glory because of my love.”
That is the expression of New Age religion personal divinity.

The RPM group are indirectly promoting revival for a christ of self: “I AM”, which is a false christ.

2 Cor 11:3-4 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
For if he who comes preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted—you may well put up with it!

People are putting up with it, and enjoying it because it is mixed with enjoyable entertainment, the approval of lots of people, and soothes “their itching ears” with appealing ideas:

2 Tim 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

The seduction for self has been helped by the philosophy of self esteem that has been promoted for years in churches to make Christians inward looking rather than outward looking to God and his counsel in the Bible. A leading proponent of self esteem philosophy is James Dobson.

This article by ex new ager Ray Yungen is an excerpt from a book he has written “For many shall come in my name”.

This online book “In the Name of Purpose” by Tamara Hartzell is very good on this topic.

Be vigilant for improper use of the phrase “I AM” in churches and Christian teachings.

Challenge improper use.

Challenging fraud and error is part of being a true Christian, an authentic witness for truth.
